Overview: What is a Driving School?

Audi Club North America and its chapters provide driving schools allowing Audi Club members to improve their driving skills in a safe and controlled manner. Although usually held on racetracks across the country, these events are NOT racing schools or competitions and emphasize learning vehicular dynamics, driving techniques, car control, and overall safety.
Why Should I Attend?
Audi's are filled with array of passive safety systems to protect you during an accident; airbags, crumple zones, seatbelt pretensioners, etc. Though arguably, the most important safety systems of a vehicle is not passive, but active.

A car's steering, braking throttle and suspension are individual components in an active safety system. They are considered "active" because it they require some action by the driver to effectively use them, or in the case of ABS or ESP, engage them.

Too often though, the driver is simply unaware that they, themselves, are the most important component in the system! If the driver does not know how to properly use the other components (steering, braking, throttle application) the chances of needing the passive safety systems to protect the driver goes up, which can lead to a much more damaging experience than if the situation was avoided.

The purpose of attending an ACNA Driver's school is to upgrade the most important component in the active safety system - you, so you can use all the components effectively to avoid an accident.

What Should I Expect?

Learning begins in the classroom where a basic overview of the weekend will be provided. Some basic lessons in terminology and vehicular dynamics are followed with plenty of Q&A time before heading out to slow speed exercises. Afterwards, you are paired with an experienced instructor who will ride along with you throughout the weekend. Students are grouped according to experience and encouraged to progress at their own pace. Once on track it is a gradual process of learning the limits of your car and yourself.

The ultimate goal for the weekend is for everyone to return home with better skills behind the wheel and an appreciation of what the driver and their Audi can do.
